Rock-Ola 476 – Random 32V mechanism breaker trips, LED #1 off during play

Hi all,

I am troubleshooting a Rock-Ola 476 and would appreciate some guidance from anyone familiar with these machines.

The problem is the 32V mechanism circuit breaker (red breaker on the power supply) trips randomly during playback.

Symptoms:

* The machine powers up normally.
* The magazine scans correctly.
* The gripper picks up and transfers the record correctly.
* The record is placed on the turntable and playback starts normally.
* The fault never occurs during magazine movement or gripper transfer.
* It only occurs while the record is already playing.

When the fault occurs:

* The red 32V mechanism breaker trips.
* LED #1 on the power supply immediately goes out.
* LEDs #2 and #3 remain on.
* All 32V functions stop.
* The amplifier and other low-voltage functions appear to remain powered.

The strange part is that the trip is completely random:

* Sometimes it trips after 10–15 seconds of playback.
* Sometimes it plays an entire record.
* Sometimes it survives one record and trips during the next.
* There is no obvious relationship to Side A or Side B selections.

Additional observations:

* The gripper motor was previously found mechanically jammed.
* I manually returned the gripper mechanism to its park/home position.
* Since then the transfer mechanism operates normally.
* The gripper motor does not feel unusually hot.
* No unusual noises are heard before the breaker trips.
* The only sound is the breaker itself tripping.

After resetting the breaker:

* Playback immediately resumes.
* The turntable continues normally.
* However, when the record reaches the end, the mechanism does not complete the next transfer cycle correctly and the gripper appears out of synchronization, requiring manual correction.

I have already:

* Checked all visible fuses.
* Reset the circuit breakers.
* Inspected the mechanism for obvious mechanical binding.

Questions:

1. Are nuisance trips of the 32V breaker common on these machines due to breaker ageing?
2. Is there a known 32V load that commonly develops intermittent overcurrent faults?
3. Could a faulty Play Control relay or relay socket cause this type of random breaker trip?
4. Is there a recommended procedure for isolating 32V loads one by one to identify the culprit?

Any suggestions on where to look next would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Tabion

Have you considered the mechanism circuit breaker?
It's possible that's the problem. Try replacing it.
I had one that was faulty also.

Thanks for the suggestion!

That’s actually becoming one of my main suspects. The trip is completely random and never seems to be associated with a specific mechanism movement. The machine can play for a few seconds, an entire record, or even start a second record before the breaker trips.

Do you happen to know the rating and part number of the original mechanism breaker, or a suitable modern replacement?

Check Sequence #16 in the manual.(Micro#3 and subsequent breaking circuit) If the gripper motor is not switched off before the mechanical end position, the circuit breaker will switch off with some delay during the play cycle.

Thanks, this is very interesting.

The gripper was previously mechanically jammed and I had to manually return it to the home position using the manual shaft on the gripper motor.

Your explanation would certainly fit the symptoms, especially because the breaker never trips during the transfer cycle itself, only after a delay while the record is already playing.

I will check Micro #3, verify whether the gripper motor remains energized after the record has been placed on the turntable, and investigate reed relay K403 on the logic board.

One additional question: does anyone know a current source or suitable replacement for the Allied Controls relay used in these machines?

The relay fitted in my jukebox is:

ALLIED CONTROLS
T362 C-C-2 / 24V
485/485 CONT 2A

If anyone knows of:

* a supplier for the original 24V relay,
* a NOS source,
* or a modern equivalent that can be adapted,

I would greatly appreciate the information.

Many thanks for your help.

Who knows grinning smiley

* einem Originalteil,
* einer NOS-Quelle (New Old Stock),
* oder einem modernen Ersatz, der bereits erfolgreich in einer Rock-Ola 476 verwendet wurde.
